SUPRA/POSTGRAD EVENTS & INFO

1. International Student Safety

Distressing reports in relation to assaults on international students have appeared in the media in recent weeks. If something has happened to you or someone you know, please report it. For anything that happens on campus, contact Security’s 24 hour emergency number: 9351 3333. For Police or Ambulance telephone 000 or 112 from a mobile phone. If you need help, or want to find out more, please contact one of SUPRA’s Student Advice and Advocacy Officer via 9351 3715 or help@supra.usyd.edu.au.

2. NSW Ministerial Task Force on International Student Issues

SUPRA will this week lodge a submission to a Task Force being run by the NSW State government. We have received feedback from international students that want travel concessions to finally be implemented, improvements to health and welfare services, better legal protections for tenancy and accommodation issues, and better protections of casual workers in respect of pay and working conditions. Our submission will address these issues and be on our web site shortly. SUPRA is also actively campaigning around these issues (see below).

3. International Student Transport Concession: Campaign Meeting

When: 12 pm, Tuesday 2nd June

Where: SUPRA Offices

The CROSS CAMPUS CONCESSIONS COALITION has re-formed to pressure the NSW state government to grant transport concessions to international students. The CCCC will be talking about taking action to oppose racist violence against international students, and the way that restricted public transport access puts students at risk of violence. Student organisations from Sydney Uni, UNSW and Newcastle University are represented in the Coalition. Come along to the organising meeting to find out how you can GET INVOLVED in the campaign for YOUR RIGHTS!

4. International Student Forum

SUPRA and the SRC will be hosting an international student forum to discuss international students well-being and representation at Sydney University. The forum will provide information on current issues, including;
* The services available to international students on campus
* The current state of your representation,
* The possibility of changes to the current structure
* A discussion of the goals for future student representatives.

When: Thursday 4th June, 3pm

Where: Merewether Lecture Theatre 2

5. Women’s Officer Election

Nominations are now open for the position of Women’s Officer for 2009-10. The Women’s Officer must be a female-identifying postgraduate student and subscribed to SUPRA. Quorum was reached at the Annual General Meeting, but the candidates for the position where not in attendance. We therefore voted to postpone the election and propose reconvening on Thursday 18th June. If you are interested contact president@supra.usyd.edu.au for more information or to nominate.

6. SUPRA Annual Report

The SUPRA Annual General Meeting accepted the Annual Report of the Association which is now available for download from our website at http://www.supra.usyd.edu.au/Rep/About_Council.html or in hard copy from our office in the Raglan Street Building.

7. National Student Conferences

If you would like to attend one of the national student conferences, such as the National Womens (NOWSA), Queer (QC), Education (EdCon) and Environment (SOS) Conference SUPRA is offering assistance with costs for postgrads. For more details please contact president@supra.usyd.edu.au

OTHER EVENTS AND INFO

8. G20 Fundraiser – Folk the Po-lice

Over June and July, 2009, three people will finally go to trial for their role in the G20 protests in Melbourne in November, 2006. These people — Sina Brown-Davis, Tim Davis Frank, and Sunil Menon — are facing charges ranging from ‘Riot’ to ‘Unlawful Assembly’, with ‘Aggravated Burglary’ and ‘Assault Police’ playing the role of Malcolm in the Middle. Note that ‘Aggravated Burglary’ is an unusually serious charge — the maximum sentence for which is 25 years gaol — & arises from brief occupations of a Defence Force recruitment centre and the offices of Tenix, a military contractor; occupations which involved nothing more serious than the use of red glitter & water pistols. (Akin Sari remains in jail serving a 28 month sentence. Other accused pleaded guilty to reduced charges & received fines &/or compensation orders &/or suspended sentences &/or bonds.)

On the day of rest - Sunday the 14th of June - there will be a fundraiser to help pay for the legal defence of these people & keep them out of gaol. All proceeds from this gig will go to the G20 Defence Fund.

      Bands playing are:

      WIM

      WINTER PEOPLE

      EMMA DAVIS

      SUI ZHEN

      ANARCHIST DUCK

      PLUTO GONSKY

      and friends…

Ticket prices: $10 (shirkers) - $15 (workers)

9. NSW Later Lawyers Network

A law student has been in contact with us as she is trying to establish a NSW Later Lawyers Network. The response to the call for expressions of interest in establishing a NSW Later Lawyers Network has been very enthusiastic so far and as a result she has set up a goggle group (see link below) so that people can start networking straight away:

http://groups.google.com/group/nsw-later-lawyers-network

Here you will find a message with a link to an anonymous survey set up to gather data necessary to establish a profile of people and get some input into what members of a Later Lawyers Network actually want.
