Green Power Now - Sign on and show your support
A set of referenda about Green Power was put to the Undergraduate student body as part of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) elections and overwhelmingly passed. SUPRA has received enquiries from Postgraduates who were disappointed at being unable to register their support for Green Power and has thus passed the following motion at the October 11, 2006 Council meeting:
That SUPRA congratulates the Green Power Now group on their overwhelming success in the passing of the Energy Referenda at the annual SRC elections, and that we affirm SUPRA’s belief that:
- The University of Sydney has a responsibility to take action on climate change.
- The University of Sydney should commit to reducing its energy use, in order to reduce its impact on climate change.
- The University of Sydney should commit to purchasing at least 20% Green Power.
- The University of Sydney should publicly declare its existing partnerships with the fossil fuel and nuclear industries.
The referenda’s success was largely due to the dedication of the activists who have been running a campaign all year dedicated to this issue – there is more information about the campaign and the reasons why Green Power is an important issue for the University of Sydney to take action on at their website: www.greencampusnow.org
SUPRA Council further decided that we would give individual Postgraduate students the chance to show their personal support for this issue, by letting you ‘sign on’ to the statements above. To have your name and faculty added, email greenpower@supra.usyd.edu.au with your name, faculty and student number (which will only be used to ensure you are an actual Sydney Uni postgrad – ONLY your name and faculty will be listed).
Janelle Forrest, Environmental Projects Coordinator, Campus Property and Services at the University of Sydney has been in contact with us to advise they are currently auditing 15 buildings across campus for energy use (both electricity and gas). The audit is reviewing all forms of energy use including heating and cooling, cooking and refrigeration, office equipment, hot water, and laboratory items. They have chosen these 15 buildings based on consumption levels, high base loads, and building condition assessment amongst other factors.
The audit will identify cost effective energy savings measures and the University will be in a strong position to apply for NSW Government grant funding having completed the Savings Action Plan. If you would like to find out more about this program, you can visit the website here: www.usyd.edu.au/sustainable or you can contact Janelle via email janelle.forrest@usyd.edu.au or on 9036 6185. Also you might like to visit the Energy Savings Action Plan’s website.
